Our vintage radio books are for enthusiasts and collectors of vintage ‘wireless sets’, mainly those built in the UK. They cover the period from the start of broadcasting in the UK in the early 1920s when many sets were home constructed, to the handsome valve (tube) radios and radiograms of the 1930s and 1940s and the start of solid state transistor sets. Some are reprints of complete books or catalogues, and others are compiled by us from material published at the time.

Illustrated catalogue of UK radios 1931-1932

book coverAt the start of the 1930s radios had emerged from the utilitarian flat box with multiple controls to the styled table and console cabinet sets usually with only three controls, on-off/volume, tuning and wavechange. Crystal sets and kits for home construction were almost, but not quite, dead, and the radiogram with electric record turntable and electro-magnetic pickup had made its appearance.Wholesalers issued catalogues in the late summer or early autumn on to which dealers could stamp their name ready for the Christmas trade. Such catalogues are eagerly sought after by collectors to identify and date the radios they find. This book is compiled from a wholesaler's annual catalogue issued in the autumn of 1931 and has been remastered by us to A4 size. Each radio is illustrated together with a technical specification and price.

Illustrated catalogue of UK radios 1933-1934

book coverBy the mid 1930s radios were becoming more and more popular for all stratas of society. More attention was being made to styling the cabinet to become a focal point in the room as women had an increasing influence on the choice of what would and what wouldn't fit in with the furniture. But they were expensive, costing anything from five to twenty times the weekly wage of an average working man. Many were bought on hire purchase with terms for purchase over 12 months figuring prominently in the catalogues. This book is compiled from a wholesaler's annual catalogue issued in the autumn of 1933 and has been remastered by us to A4 size. Each radio is illustrated together with specification and price.

Illustrated catalogue of UK radios 1935-1936
book coverDuring the second half of the 1930s industrial designers had pretty well taken over from engineers in styling radio cabinets. Many sets from the same manufacturer bore a family likeness. Many were quite elaborately decorated with banded veneer with exotic grain patterns, and were sprayed with synthetic lacquers which held their shine and resisted attack from smoky coal fires better than the old shellac finishes. Large clear tuning dials, often with the names of stations, had taken over from circular dials behind little peep-holes. In the opinion of many collectors, radio manufacturers and cabinet designers in the second half of the 1930s achieved an elegance reflecting a middle-class living style that disappeared with the war, never to return. This book is compiled from a wholesaler's annual catalogue issued in the autumn of 1935 and has been remastered by us to A4 size. Each radio is illustrated together with specification and price.
